환영 매트

Whoever welcomes one of these little children in my name welcomes me.

Browsing through the doormats displayed in my local big box store, I noted the messages stamped on their surfaces. “Hello!” “Home” with a heart for the “o.” And the more customary one I chose, “Welcome.” Putting it in place at home, I checked my heart. Was my home really welcoming the way God desires it to be? To a child selling chocolate for a school project?

 

A neighbor in need? A family member from out of town who called on the spur of the moment?

In Mark 9, Jesus moves from the Mount of Transfiguration where Peter, James, and John stood in awe of His holy presence (VV. 1-13), to healing a possessed boy with a father who’d lost hope (VV. 14-29). Jesus then offered private lessons to the disciples concerning His upcoming death (VV. 30-32). They missed His point—badly (VV. 33-34). In response, Jesus took a child atop His lap saying, “Whoever wel- comes one of these little children in my name welcomes me; and whoever welcomes me does not welcome me but the one who sent me” (V. 37). The word welcome here means to receive and accept as a guest. Jesus wants His disciples to welcome all, even the undervalued and the inconvenient as if we were welcoming Him. I thought of my welcome mat and wondered how I extend His love to others. It starts by welcoming Jesus as a treasured guest. Will I permit Him to lead me, welcoming others the way He desires?

우리 동네 대형마트에서 전시된 현관용 매트들을 둘러보는데, “헬로우!” 나 “홈(Home)”의 영문 “o”자 대신에 하트를 쓴 것 등, 매트 위에 글귀들이 찍혀 있는 것을 알게 되었습니다. 그래서 나는 좀더 평범하게 “웰컴”이 찍힌 매트를 선택했습니다. 이것을 집에 놓아두면서 내 마음을 살펴보았습니다. 우리 집은 정말로 하나님께서 바라는 방식으로 사람들을 환영하고 있는가? 학교 과제를 위해 초콜릿을 파는 아이에게는? 도움이 필요한 이웃에게는? 갑자기 전화를 한 먼데 사는 가족에게는?

 

마가복음 9장에서 예수님은 베드로, 야고보, 요한이 예수님의 거룩한 임재에 놀라 서 있던 변화 산에서 내려오셔서(1-13절) 희망을 잃은 아버지의 귀신들린 아들을 고쳐주십니다(14-29절). 그런 다음 다가올 주님의 죽음에 관해 제자들에게만 일러주셨습니다(30-32절). 그러나 제자들이 예수님이 말씀하신 요점을 전혀 깨닫지 못하는 일이 발생하자(33-34절), 이에 예수님은 한 아이를 무릎 위에 앉히시고 이렇게 말씀하셨습니다. “누구든지 내 이름으로 이런 어린 아이 하나를 영접하면 곧 나를 영접함이요 누구든지 나를 영접하면 나를 영접함이 아니요 나를 보내신 이를 영접함이니라”(37절). 여기서 ‘영접한다’는 말은 손님으로 맞이하고 받아들이는 것을 의미합니다. 예수님은 제자들이 모든 사람들, 소외되고 불편한 사람들까지 주님을 영접하듯 영접하기를 원하십니다. 나는 환영 매트를 생각하며 어떻게 예수님의 사랑을 다른 사람들에게 전할 것인지 생각해 보았습니다. 그것은 예수님을 귀한 손님으로 영접하는 것으로부터 시작됩니다. 나도 주님의 인도하심을 따라 주님이 원하시는 방식으로 다른 사람들을 영접해야 하지 않을까요?

30. They left that place and passed through Galilee. Jesus did not want anyone to know where they were,

31. because he was teaching his disciples. He said to them, "The Son of Man is going to be betrayed into the hands of men. They will kill him, and after three days he will rise."

32. But they did not understand what he meant and were afraid to ask him about it.

33. They came to Capernaum. When he was in the house, he asked them, "What were you arguing about on the road?"

34. But they kept quiet because on the way they had argued about who was the greatest.

35. Sitting down, Jesus called the Twelve and said, "If anyone wants to be first, he must be the very last, and the servant of all."

36. He took a little child and had him stand among them. Taking him in his arms, he said to them,

37. "Whoever welcomes one of these little children in my name welcomes me; and whoever welcomes me does not welcome me but the one who sent me."

30. ○그 곳을 떠나 갈릴리 가운데로 지날새 예수께서 아무에게도 알리고자 아니하시니

31. 이는 제자들을 가르치시며 또 인자가 사람들의 손에 넘겨져 죽임을 당하고 죽은 지 삼 일만에 살아나리라는 것을 말씀하셨기 때문이더라

32. 그러나 제자들은 이 말씀을 깨닫지 못하고 묻기도 두려워하더라

33. ○가버나움에 이르러 집에 계실새 제자들에게 물으시되 너희가 길에서 서로 토론한 것이 무엇이냐 하시되

34. 그들이 잠잠하니 이는 길에서 서로 누가 크냐 하고 쟁론하였음이라

35. 예수께서 앉으사 열두 제자를 불러서 이르시되 누구든지 첫째가 되고자 하면 뭇 사람의 끝이 되며 뭇 사람을 섬기는 자가 되어야 하리라 하시고

36. 어린 아이 하나를 데려다가 그들 가운데 세우시고 안으시며 제자들에게 이르시되

37. 누구든지 내 이름으로 이런 어린 아이 하나를 영접하면 곧 나를 영접함이요 누구든지 나를 영접하면 나를 영접함이 아니요 나를 보내신 이를 영접함이니라
