Jesus must become greater; I must become less. [ JOHN 3:30 ]

[ JOHN 3:30 ] When my pastor asked our class a difficult question about the life of Jesus, my hand shot up. I had just read the story, so I knew this one. And I wanted the others in the room to know that I knew it too. After all, I’m a Bible teacher. How embarrassing it would be to be stumped in front of them! Now I was embarrassed by my fear of embarrassment. So I lowered my hand. Am I this insecure? John the Baptist shows a better way. When his disciples complained that people were beginning to leave him and follow Jesus, John said he was glad to hear it. He was merely the messenger. “I am not the Messiah but am sent ahead of him. He must become greater; I must become less” (3:28–30). John realized the point of his existence was Jesus. He is “the one who comes from heaven” and “is above all” (V. 31)—the divine Son who gave His life for us. He must receive all the glory and fame. Any attention drawn to ourselves distracts from God. And since He is our only Savior and the only hope for the world, any credit we steal from Him ends up hurting us. Let’s resolve to step out of the picture—to stop photobombing Jesus. It’s best for Him, for the world, and for us. MIKE WITTMER [ 요한복음 3:26 - 3:36 ] - 찬송가 95 장 그는 흥하여야 하겠고 나는 쇠하여야 하리라 [요한복음 3:30] 목사님이 우리 반에서 예수님의 삶에 대한 어려운 문제를 내셨을 때, 나는 손을 번쩍 들었습니다. 그 이야기를 읽은 지 얼마 안 되어 그 답을 알고 있었던 것입니다. 나는 그 방 안에 있던 다른 사람들도 내가 답을 알고 있다는 것을 알기를 바랐습니다. 사실 나는 명색이 성경교사입니다. 그런 내가 그들 앞에서 쩔쩔맨다면 얼마나 창피한 일일까요! 헌데 이제 나는 창피하게 되는 것이 두려워지면서 당황스러워졌습니다. 그래서 손을 내렸습니다. ‘내가 이렇게 자신이 없나?’ 세례 요한은 이런 경우에 더 나은 모습을 보여줍니다. 사람들이 그를 떠나 예수님을 따른다고 제자들이 불평했을 때, 세례 요한은 그 이야기를 듣고 오히려 기쁘다고 했습니다. 그는 단지 소식을 전하는 전달자에 불과했습니다. “나는 그리스도가 아니요 그의 앞에 보내심을 받은 자라 그는 흥하여야 하겠고 나는 쇠하여야 하리라”(3:28-30). 요한은 자신이 예수님을 위해 존재한다는 점을 알았습니다. 예수님은 “하늘로부터 오시는 이”시며 “만물 위에 계시는” (31절) 거룩하신 하나님의 아들이시며, 우리를 위해 자신의 목숨을 버리신 분이십니다. 주님이 모든 영광과 명예를 받아 마땅합니다. 어떤 식으로든 우리 자신에게 주목하면 하나님에게서 멀어지게 됩니다. 그리고 주님은 우리의 유일한 구주시며 이 세상의 유일한 희망이시기 때문에, 그분의 명성을 조금이라도 훔쳐온다면 결국은 우리를 상하게 합니다. 우리 모두 예수님의 사진에서 빠져나와 예수님의 참 모습을 망치는 일이 없도록 합시다. 그렇게 하는 것이 주님과 세상과 우리에게 가장 좋습니다.

When are you tempted to share the spotlight with Jesus? How can you turn the attention to where it belongs? Heavenly Father, help us understand that our task is to direct everyone’s attention to Your Son, so that He increasingly fills up the frame. Help us see that we must decrease and He must increase. 26. They came to John and said to him, "Rabbi, that man who was with you on the other side of the Jordan -- the one you testified about -- well, he is baptizing, and everyone is going to him." 27. To this John replied, "A man can receive only what is given him from heaven. 28. You yourselves can testify that I said, `I am not the Christ but am sent ahead of him.' 29. The bride belongs to the bridegroom. The friend who attends the bridegroom waits and listens for him, and is full of joy when he hears the bridegroom's voice. That joy is mine, and it is now complete. 30. He must become greater; I must become less. 31. "The one who comes from above is above all; the one who is from the earth belongs to the earth, and speaks as one from the earth. The one who comes from heaven is above all. 32. He testifies to what he has seen and heard, but no one accepts his testimony. 33. The man who has accepted it has certified that God is truthful. 34. For the one whom God has sent speaks the words of God, for God gives the Spirit without limit. 35. The Father loves the Son and has placed everything in his hands. 36. Whoever believes in the Son has eternal life, but whoever rejects the Son will not see life, for God's wrath remains on him." 예수님과 함께 각광을 받고 싶었던 적이 있습니까? 그런 주목을 어떻게 본 위치로 되돌려놓을 수 있을까요? 하나님 아버지, 우리의 임무는 모든 사람의 관심을 당신의 아들에게로 향하게 하여, 주님이 큰 틀을 채워 나가시게 하는 것임을 이해할 수 있게 도와주소서. 우리는 쇠하고 주님은 흥해야 한다는 것을 알게 하소서. 26. 그들이 요한에게 가서 이르되 랍비여 선생님과 함께 요단 강 저편에 있던 이 곧 선생님이 증언하시던 이가 세례를 베풀매 사람이 다 그에게로 가더이다 27. 요한이 대답하여 이르되 만일 하늘에서 주신 바 아니면 사람이 아무 것도 받을 수 없느니라 28. 내가 말한 바 나는 그리스도가 아니요 그의 앞에 보내심을 받은 자라고 한 것을 증언할 자는 너희니라 29. 신부를 취하는 자는 신랑이나 서서 신랑의 음성을 듣는 친구가 크게 기뻐하나니 나는 이러한 기쁨으로 충만하였노라 30. 그는 흥하여야 하겠고 나는 쇠하여야 하리라 하니라 31. 위로부터 오시는 이는 만물 위에 계시고 땅에서 난 이는 땅에 속하여 땅에 속한 것을 말하느니라 하늘로부터 오시는 이는 만물 위에 계시나니 32. 그가 친히 보고 들은 것을 증언하되 그의 증언을 받는 자가 없도다 33. 그의 증언을 받는 자는 하나님이 참되시다는 것을 인쳤느니라 34. 하나님이 보내신 이는 하나님의 말씀을 하나니 이는 하나님이 성령을 한량 없이 주심이니라 35. 아버지께서 아들을 사랑하사 만물을 다 그의 손에 주셨으니 36. 아들을 믿는 자에게는 영생이 있고 아들에게 순종하지 아니하는 자는 영생을 보지 못하고 도리어 하나님의 진노가 그 위에 머물러 있느니라
