Be
alert and of sober mind. Your enemy the devil prowls around like a roaring lion
looking for someone to devour.
1Peter 5:8
I grew up in warm southern
cities, so when I moved north, it took me a while to learn how to drive safely
during the long, snowy months. During my first hard winter, I ended up stranded
in a snowdrift three times! But after several years
of practice, I began to
feel comfortable driving in wintry con- ditions. In fact, I felt a little too
comfortable. I stopped being as vigilant. And that’s when I hit a patch of black
ice and skid- ded into a telephone pole on the side of the road!
Thankfully,
no one was hurt, but I learned something impor- tant that day. I realized how
dangerous it can be to feel comfort- able. Instead of being watchful, I had
gone
on “autopilot.”
We need to practice that same kind of vigilance in
our spiritual lives. Peter warns believers not to glide thought- lessly through
life, but to “be alert” (1 PETER 5:8). The devil is actively trying to destroy
us, and so we too need to be active, resisting temptation and standing firm in
our faith (V . 9). That’s not some- thing we have to do on our own though. God
promises to be with us in our suffer-
ings and, ultimately, to make us
“strong, firm and steadfast” (V . 10). By His power, we learn to remain watchful
and alert in resisting evil and following Him. AMY PETERSON

베드로전서 5:8
나는 남부의 따뜻한 도시에서
자랐습니다. 그래서 북부로 이사 온 후 눈이 오는 몇 달 동안 안전하게 운전하는 법을 배우는데 꽤 시간이 걸렸습니다. 혹독했던 첫 겨울에 나는
세 번이나 눈 더미에 갇혔습니다! 하지만 몇 년 간 연습하고 나니 겨울에 운전하는 것이 편하게 느껴지기 시작했습니다. 사실 어느 정도 너무
편하게 느껴서 더 이상 조심하지 않았습니다. 그런데 바로 그때 나는 검은 색의 얼음 더미를 치고는 길옆의 전신주 쪽으로 미끄러졌습니다.
감사하게도 아무도 다치지는 않았지만 그날 중요한 것을 배웠습니다. 편하다고 느끼는 것이 얼마나 위험할 수 있는지를 깨달은 것입니다.
“자동조종장치”로 가는 차처럼 조심하지 않고 운전하고 다녔던 것입니다.
우리의 영적 삶에서도 이렇게 조심할 필요가 있습니다. 베드로는
성도들에게 생각 없이 삶을 흘러가는 대로 살지 말고 “깨어 있으라” (베드로전서 5:8)고 경고합니다. 마귀는 우리를 무너뜨리려고 적극적으로
애쓰고 있기 때문에 우리 또한 적극적으로 유혹에 대항하고 믿음 안에 굳게 서야 합니다(9절). 하지만 그것은 우리 스스로 해야만 하는 일이
아닙니다. 하나님은 우리의 고난 중에 함께하시고 결국에는 우리를 “굳건하게 하시며 강하게 하시며 터를 견고하게”(10절) 하겠다고 약속하십니다.
주님의 능력으로 우리는 주님을 따르며 악에 대항하는 일에 근신하고 깨어있는 것을 배우게 됩니다.
