Pilgrim is a musical based on The Pilgrim’s Progress, an allegory of the life of a believer in Jesus. In the story, all the unseen forces of the spiritual world are made visible to the audience. The character of the King, representing God, is present onstage for almost the entire show. He’s dressed in white and actively blocks attacks from the enemy, tenderly holds those who are in pain, and nudges others to good works. Despite his indispensable role, the main human characters can’t physically see the King, only the effects of what He does.

Do we live as if the true King is active in our lives, even when we can’t physically see Him? In a time of need, the prophet Daniel received a vision from a heavenly messenger (DANIEL 10:7) who’d been sent in direct response to his faithful prayers (V. 12). The messenger explained that spiritual warfare had delayed his coming and angelic backup had to be dispatched (V. 13). Daniel was reminded that even though he couldn’t see God, he was sur- rounded by evidence of His care and attention. “Do not be afraid, you are highly esteemed,” the messenger encouraged him (V. 19). At the end of Pilgrim, when the main character reaches heaven’s door after many tribulations, he joyfully cries out for the first time, “I can see the King!” Until we see Him with our new eyes in heaven, we look for His action in our lives today. 예수님을 믿는 성도의 삶을 우화적으로 그린 ‘천로역정’을 각색한 뮤지컬 ‘순례자’는 그 공연에서 관객들에게 눈에 보이지 않는 영적 세계의 모든 세력들의 모습을 보여줍니다. 하나님을 상징하는 왕의 역을 맡은 배우는 공연의 거의 전반에 걸쳐 무대에 모습을 보입니다. 그는 흰옷을 입고 적의 공격을 적극적으로 막아내며, 고통에 신음하는 자들을 부드럽게 품고 사람들이 선한 일을 하도록 인도합니다. 없어서는 안되는 왕의 역할임에도 불구하고, 연극에 등장하는 주요 인물들은 왕이 하는 일의 결과만 볼 뿐, 직접 그 왕을 보지는 못합니다.

실제로 볼 수는 없어도 진정한 왕이신 그분이 우리 삶에서 활동하시는 것처럼 우리는 살고 있습니까? 어려운 시기에 다니엘 선지자는 그의 신실한 기도에 직접 응답하여(12절) 하나님이 보내신 천사를 환상으로 보았습니다 (다니엘 10:7). 천사는 영적 싸움으로 그가 오는 것이 지연되자 도움을 위해 다른 천사가 동원되었다고 설명했습니다(13절). 다니엘은 하나님을 볼 수는 없었어도 그에게 하나님이 돌보시고 지켜보신다는 많은 증거가 있음을 알게 되었습니다. 천사는 “큰 은총을 받은 사람이여 두려워하지 말라”고 다니엘을 격려했습니다(19절). 뮤지컬 ‘순례자’의 마지막에 주인공은 수많은 고난을 겪은 후 천국 문에 도달하여 비로소 “나는 왕이신 하나님을 볼 수 있습니다!”라고 기쁘게 외칩니다. 천국에 가서 새로워진 눈으로 하나님을 보게 될 때까지 오늘 우리의 삶 속에서 하나님께서 직접 행하시기를 기대합니다.

10. A hand touched me and set me trembling on my hands and knees.

11. He said, "Daniel, you who are highly esteemed, consider carefully the words I am about to speak to you, and stand up, for I have now been sent to you." And when he said this to me, I stood up trembling.

12. Then he continued, "Do not be afraid, Daniel. Since the first day that you set your mind to gain understanding and to humble yourself before your God, your words were heard, and I have come in response to them.

13. But the prince of the Persian kingdom resisted me twenty-one days. Then Michael, one of the chief princes, came to help me, because I was detained there with the king of Persia.

14. Now I have come to explain to you what will happen to your people in the future, for the vision concerns a time yet to come."

15. While he was saying this to me, I bowed with my face toward the ground and was speechless.

16. Then one who looked like a man touched my lips, and I opened my mouth and began to speak. I said to the one standing before me, "I am overcome with anguish because of the vision, my lord, and I am helpless.

17. How can I, your servant, talk with you, my lord? My strength is gone and I can hardly breathe."

18. Again the one who looked like a man touched me and gave me strength.

19. "Do not be afraid, O man highly esteemed," he said. "Peace! Be strong now; be strong." When he spoke to me, I was strengthened and said, "Speak, my lord, since you have given me strength."

하나님이 당신의 삶에서 일하시는 것을 어떻게 알 수 있습니까?

어느 부분에서 하나님이 함께하신다는 것을 믿으려고 애쓰십니까?

10. ○한 손이 있어 나를 어루만지기로 내가 떨었더니 그가 내 무릎과 손바닥이 땅에 닿게 일으키고

11. 내게 이르되 큰 은총을 받은 사람 다니엘아 내가 네게 이르는 말을 깨닫고 일어서라 내가 네게 보내심을 받았느니라 하더라 그가 내게 이 말을 한 후에 내가 떨며 일어서니

12. 그가 내게 이르되 다니엘아 두려워하지 말라 네가 깨달으려 하여 네 하나님 앞에 스스로 겸비하게 하기로 결심하던 첫날부터 네 말이 응답 받았으므로 내가 네 말로 말미암아 왔느니라

13. 그런데 바사 왕국의 군주가 이십일 일 동안 나를 막았으므로 내가 거기 바사 왕국의 왕들과 함께 머물러 있더니 가장 높은 군주 중 하나인 미가엘이 와서 나를 도와 주므로

14. 이제 내가 마지막 날에 네 백성이 당할 일을 네게 깨닫게 하러 왔노라 이는 이 환상이 오랜 후의 일임이라 하더라

15. 그가 이런 말로 내게 이를 때에 내가 곧 얼굴을 땅에 향하고 말문이 막혔더니

16. 인자와 같은 이가 있어 내 입술을 만진지라 내가 곧 입을 열어 내 앞에 서 있는 자에게 말하여 이르되 내 주여 이 환상으로 말미암아 근심이 내게 더하므로 내가 힘이 없어졌나이다

17. 내 몸에 힘이 없어졌고 호흡이 남지 아니하였사오니 내 주의 이 종이 어찌 능히 내 주와 더불어 말씀할 수 있으리이까 하니

18. ○또 사람의 모양 같은 것 하나가 나를 만지며 나를 강건하게 하여

19. 이르되 큰 은총을 받은 사람이여 두려워하지 말라 평안하라 강건하라 강건하라 그가 이같이 내게 말하매 내가 곧 힘이 나서 이르되 내 주께서 나를 강건하게 하셨사오니 말씀하옵소서
