Practicing What We Preach 말하는 대로 실천하기 [ 1 John 2:7 - 2:11 ] - hymn 204 Anyone who claims to be in the light but hates a brother or sister is still in the darkness. 1 John 2:9 Pastor and writer Eugene Peterson had the opportunity to hear a lecture by Swiss physician and highly respected pastoral counselor Paul Tournier. Peterson had read the doctor’s works, and admired his approach to healing. The lecture left a deep impression on Peterson. As he listened, he had the feeling that Tournier lived what he spoke and spoke what he lived. Peterson chose this word to describe his experi­ ence: “Congruence. It is the best word I can come up with.” Congruence—it’s what some refer to as “practicing what you preach” or “walk­ ing your talk.” The apostle John stresses that if any of us “claims to be in the light but hates a brother or sister,” then we’re “still in the darkness” (1 JOHN 2:9). In essence, our lives and our words simply don’t match up. John goes further to say such people “do not know where they are going” (V . 11). The word he chose to describe how incongruence leaves us? Blind. Living closely aligned to God by allowing the light of His Word to illuminate our paths keeps us from living blind. The result is a godly vision that gives clarity and focus to our days— our words and actions match up. When others observe this, the impression is not necessarily that of someone who knows everywhere they’re going, but of someone who clearly knows who they’re following. But he that hateth his brother is in darkness, and walketh in darkness, and knoweth not whither he goeth, because that darkness hath blinded his eyes. ‘언행일치’라는 말에 비추어 우리 자신을 어떻게 설명할 수 있을까요? 어떻게 앞으로 더욱 일치된 삶을 살 수 있을까요? 예수님, 우리의 말과 행동이 일치되게 해주소서. 부족한 모습이지만, 하루하루 앞으로 보다 일치된 삶을 살아가고 싶습니다. 사람들이 일치된 우리 삶을 지켜보고 주님께로 나아올 수 있게 해주소서. 7. ○사랑하는 자들아 내가 새 계명을 너희에게 쓰는 것이 아니라 너희가 처음부터 가진 옛 계명이니 이 옛 계명은 너희가 들은 바 말씀이거니와 8. 다시 내가 너희에게 새 계명을 쓰노니 그에게와 너희에게도 참된 것이라 이는 어둠이 지나가고 참빛이 벌써 비침이니라 9. 빛 가운데 있다 하면서 그 형제를 미워하는 자는 지금까지 어둠에 있는 자요 10. 그의 형제를 사랑하는 자는 빛 가운데 거하여 자기 속에 거리낌이 없으나 11. 그의 형제를 미워하는 자는 어둠에 있고 또 어둠에 행하며 갈 곳을 알지 못하나니 이는 그 어둠이 그의 눈을 멀게 하였음이라
