will rejoice over you with singing. Zephaniah 3:17
My grandmother
recently sent me a folder full of old photographs, and as I thumbed through
them, one caught my eye. In it, I’m two years old, and I’m sitting on one end of
a hearth in front of a fireplace. on the other end, my dad has his arm around my
mom’s shoulders. Both are gazing at me with ｅxpressions of love and
delight.
I pinned this photo to my dresser, where I see it every morning.
It’s a wonderful reminder of their love for me. The truth is, though, that even
the love of good parents is imperfect. I saved this photo because it reminds me
that although human love may fail sometimes, God’s love never fails—and
according to Scripture, God looks at me the way my parents are looking at me in
this picture.
The prophet Zephaniah described this love in a way that
astounds me. He describes God as rejoicing over His people with singing. God’s
people had not earned this love. They had failed to obey Him or to treat each
other with compassion. But Zephaniah promised that in the end, God’s love would
prevail over their failures. God would take away their punishment (Zephaniah
3:15), and He would rejoice over them (v. 17). He would gather His people into
His arms, bring them home, and restore them (v. 20).
That’s a love worth
reflecting on every morning.

최근에 할머니가 옛날 사진으로 가득 찬 앨범 하나를
보내주셨습니다. 훌훌 넘기며 훑어보고 있는데 한 사진이 눈에 들어왔습니다. 사진 속에는 벽난로 앞에 있는 작은 난로의 한쪽 끝에 두 살배기인
내가 앉아 있고, 다른 쪽
끝에는 아빠가 엄마 어깨에 팔을 두르고 있었습니다. 두 분은 사랑과 기쁨의 표정으로 나를
바라보고
있었습니다.
나는 그 사진을 화장대에 꽂아 놓고 매일 아침 바라봅니다. 그 사진을 볼 때마다 부모님이 나를 얼마나 사랑
하는지를 떠올립니다. 하지만 사실 아무리 훌륭한 부모님의 사랑도 완벽하지 않습니다. 내가 이 사진을 보관하고 있는 것은 그 사진이 사람의 사랑은
때로 식을
수 있지만 하나님의 사랑은 절대로 그렇지 않다는 것을 떠올려주기 때문입니다. 성경에 따르면 부모님이 사진 속에서 나를 바라보는
것처럼 하나님도 그렇게 나를 바라보십니다.
나는 스바냐 선지자가 하나님의 사랑에 대해 묘사한 것을 보며 놀랐습니다. 그는 하나님이 자기
백성들을 보고 노래를 부르며 기뻐하신다고 기록하고 있습니다. 하나님의 백성들은 그런 사랑을 받을 자격이 없었습니다. 그들은 하나님을 따르지도
않았고 서로 연민을 갖고 대해 주지도 않았습니다. 하지만 스바냐는 결국에는 하나님의 사랑이 백성들의 잘못을 모두 덮을 것이라고 약속했습니다.
하나님은 그들이 받을 형벌을 제하시고(스바냐 3:15), 그들로 인하여 기뻐하실 것입니다(17절). 하나님은 그의 백성들을 품에 안으시고,
본향으로 데려와 회복시키실 것입니다(20절).
이 사랑을 우리는 매일 아침 묵상할 가치가 있는
것입니다.
